For many individuals, the earliest signs of aging occur around the eyes due to gravity and a loss of collagen that causes the skin on the upper and lower eyelids to thin, wrinkle, and sag. The effects on the lower lid are characterized by tired-looking eyes and puffy pouches that even the best night’s rest cannot erase.

Eyelid surgery can address the visible signs of aging around the eyes and take years off your appearance by creating a more alert, rejuvenated appearance. Gallas Plastic Surgery offers this procedure for patients in and around Houston, Texas.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also called an eyelid lift or blepharoplasty, is performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids to remove the excess tissue that makes the eyes look tired or angry. This surgical procedure is ideal for patients hoping to correct signs of aging or younger patients with inherited traits, such as under-eye bags.

Cosmetic eyelid surgery can address issues like puffiness, sagging, and wrinkles around the eyes resulting from aging, genetics, or other factors. The goal of eyelid surgery is to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes, making them appear more youthful and refreshed.

Am I a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

An eyelid lift restores youthfulness to the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. This surgical procedure is appropriate for men and women who are looking to reduce the appearance of aging or for younger patients desiring a cosmetic change. Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery do not smoke, are in good overall health, and have realistic expectations of their results.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty is an excellent procedure that offers the following benefits:

  • Addresses signs of aging on the upper and lower eyelids
  • Minimizes lines and wrinkles around the eyes
  • Reduces puffiness and bagginess around the eyes
  • Improves the appearance of droopy eyelids
  • Enhances symmetry between the eyes
  • Maintains a more harmonious balance between the eyes and the rest of the face
  • Increases confidence and self-esteem

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Cosmetic eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

Eyelid surgery is performed under general anesthesia or a local anesthetic with sedation, depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient’s preference. The surgeon will decide the most appropriate option to ensure the patient’s comfort and safety.

During the procedure, the surgeon will make precise incisions along the natural lines and creases of the eyelids.

  • Upper eyelid incisions are made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid.
  • Lower eyelid incisions are made just below the lower lash line or posteriorly through the inside of the lower eyelid (transconjunctival approach).

The surgeon will trim excess skin and remove or reposition fat pockets to eliminate sagging skin, reduce puffiness, and smooth out wrinkles around the eyes. Once the desired appearance is achieved, the surgeon will close the incisions.

What Will My Eyelid Lift Recovery Be Like?

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, and you can return home to recover shortly after your anesthesia wears off. However, you will need someone to drive you home as you will likely still feel groggy due to the anesthesia or sedation.

Your incisions will be covered with a gauze dressing to protect them during the healing process. Some bruising, swelling, and tenderness around the eyes are normal and should subside significantly over the following one to two weeks. Some patients initially experience a temporary blurriness or dryness of the eyes after eyelid surgery. Any discomfort can be alleviated with pain medication or cold compresses.

Most patients return to work within one week, but it is essential to refrain from strenuous exercise for four to six weeks, as directed by Dr. Gallas.

When Will I See My Eyelid Lift Results?

You will start to see the results of your eyelid lift soon after your surgery; however, as there will be moderate to significant bruising and swelling, these results will continue to improve over the following days and weeks.

The results of your eyelid lift are long-lasting, but they will not stop the natural aging process. Results can be extended by staying out of the sun, keeping your skin hydrated, and eating a healthy diet.

Eyelid Surgery FAQ

Can eyelid surgery be combined with other procedures?

Blepharoplasty is often combined with other cosmetic facial surgery to achieve more complete facial rejuvenation and to reduce recovery time and financial cost (as opposed to performing them separately). Other facial procedures commonly combined with an eyelid lift include a brow lift, facelift, and neck lift surgery.

Does eyelid surgery cause scarring?

Like any surgical procedure, eyelid surgery will cause scars where the incisions are made. However, Dr. Gallas takes great care to place the incisions in the natural folds and creases of the eyelids so the resulting scars will be virtually undetectable.

How much does eyelid surgery cost in Houston, TX?

Your eyelid surgery is tailored to your specific needs and aesthetic goals. Due to the personalization of this procedure, the cost will vary depending on your amount of laxity, the amount of time spent in the operating room, facility fees, and anesthesia costs. You will receive an accurate price estimate for your eyelid surgery procedure during your consultation with Dr. Gallas.

What are the potential risks and complications associated with eyelid surgery?

Potential risks and complications of eyelid surgery include infection, bleeding, dry eyes, temporary or permanent changes in eyelid sensation, asymmetry, and, in rare cases, vision changes or blindness. Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your eyelid surgery and following all their preoperative and postoperative instructions will significantly reduce your risk for complications.
