Why Is Breast Implant Removal Performed?

Breast implant removal, or explant, is considered in women who are deciding to have their implants removed for a variety of reasons.

Are You Unhappy With Your Implant Selection?

Some women remove their implants because they are not satisfied with the look, feel, or shape of their breasts with implants. Implants can be removed permanently or exchanged for an implant of a different size, filling material, or placement.

Are You Frustrated With How Your Implants Have Aged?

Aesthetic dissatisfaction may be present initially after your augmentation, or may develop as the implants or breasts age and change over time. Women who are not satisfied with the appearance after breastfeeding or losing weight may require an implant exchange with or without a breast lift.

Are You Experiencing Implant Complications?

Implant complications are the most common reasons for explant. Breast implants are durable and long lasting, but complications are possible. Implanted devices such as breast implants are not designed to last forever.

  • Capsular contracture develops when the scar tissue surrounding the implant thickens and tightens, causing aesthetic distortion and physical discomfort. The implants and often the scar tissue must be removed to address this concern.
  • Implant rupture occurs when the silicone or saline implant weakens and develops a tear that allows the contents to escape into the implant pocket. Saline ruptures are more noticeable than silicone ruptures due to the body’s natural ability to absorb the saline solution. This is generally a harmless occurrence… Silicone ruptures are often called “silent” ruptures, meaning that the silicone remains close to the implant within the breast pocket for a period of time following the leakage without being noticed.
  • Implant displacement occurs when the implant shifts within the breast pocket. This can be due to normal wear with stretching of the pocket, or muscular displacement.

Are You Worried About Implant Safety?

Breast implants are generally safe, but they are not without risk. Physical complications are the most common problems associated with implants, but they are not the only ones.

  • Breast implant illness (BII) is a recognized term that applies to some women with breast implants to describe a collection of nonspecific symptoms like joint pain, muscle weakness, headaches, brain fog, and memory loss. BII is not a medical diagnosis, and there is no scientific data to directly link breast implants as the cause of these symptoms.
  • Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare disease that can potentially develop in the scar tissue around textured implants. Although this is a very rare cancer of the immune system, it is usually treatable when diagnosed early.

Dr. Gallas located in Houston, TX does not offer textured implants at his practice. He is happy to discuss all options with women who are concerned about this issue.

How Is Breast Implant Removal Performed?

Breast implant removal is commonly performed using your initial breast augmentation incision—particularly when the incision was made along the inframammary fold. The implant is removed, the breast pocket is either cleaned and tightened or sometimes removed completely, and the incision is closed to reveal a tighter and smaller breast.

Breast revision surgery  inserts a new implant into either the same space or within a new pocket before the incisions are closed. This procedure is beneficial for women who experience implant complications or for women who want larger or smaller implants.

The scar tissue around the breast may or may not be removed. This will depend on whether the scar tissue is contributing to complications.

What Will My Breast Implant Removal Be Like?

Patients can return home shortly after the anesthesia wears off—please keep in mind that you cannot drive yourself back from the operation. Patients should have someone by their side to help them with all physical activities for the first 24 hours of their recovery.

The recovery period for your breast implant removal will be similar to that of your initial breast augmentation. The chest will be wrapped with a compression bandage that will help reduce post-operative swelling, promote blood circulation, and facilitate the healing of your breasts.

Your breasts will be swollen, bruised, and sore following the procedure. Prescription or over-the-counter pain medication can be taken to help alleviate the discomfort.

Most women return to work and their normal activities after several days. Strenuous exercise, including running, yoga, and weight training, should be avoided for four weeks to reduce the chances of post-surgical complications.

When Will I See My Results From Breast Implant Removal?

The results of your breast implant removal will be apparent immediately. Some bruising and swelling may persist in the chest region for a few weeks, but this swelling will disappear gradually over time.

Your breast implant removal is permanent. Since this procedure does not stop the natural aging process, breast sagging may eventually occur. A breast lift can address any sagging or breakdown of the breast tissues.

How Much Does Breast Implant Removal Cost?

The cost of any plastic surgery procedure depends on the surgical techniques used and the experience of the surgeon. Your breast implant removal cost will include anesthesia, facility, and surgeon’s fees, along with any other procedures that are performed in combination with your removal. You will be given an accurate cost estimate during your consultation with Dr. Gallas.

Should You Combine a Breast Lift?

Many women who choose to remove their breast implants benefit from a breast lift. Breast lift surgery addresses breast sagging and breast shape by tightening the glandular tissues and removing excess skin.

Breast sagging is common after the removal of large breast implants. Your breasts adjust to the extra volume of the implant, and the skin and tissues cannot always contract around the new breast shape. This procedure restores a youthful breast appearance by tightening the breast tissue and removing the extra stretch-out skin.

What Other Procedures Are Offered at Gallas Plastic Surgery?

Breast implant removal is often performed as a standalone procedure or in combination with a breast lift. While it is not required, this procedure can be performed alongside liposuction or a tummy tuck to contour other areas of the body.
