For some women, an enlarged labia may cause physical discomfort and emotional distress or interfere with some types of activities or certain clothing. Women may be born with enlarged labia, or the labia may become stretched or enlarged during childbirth. When this is the case, a surgical procedure may become necessary.

Labiaplasty (also known as labial reduction or labia rejuvenation) is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce the size and enhance the shape of the labia minora (inner lips).

While each woman’s body is beautiful, some women are uncomfortable with the stretched or enlarged shape or size of their labia minora. Often, the labia minora is longer or disproportionate to the labia majora.

WHAT CAN LABIAPLASTY HELP?

Some of the most mentioned issues that make women uncomfortable with their vulva include discomfort when engaging in physical activities, anxiety or discomfort with sexual partners, and aesthetic dissatisfaction.

Some women are also concerned their labia minora will show through tight clothing, like yoga pants.

Am I a Candidate for Labiaplasty?

You are a candidate for labiaplasty if you have a stretched labia that is interfering with normal activities or making you self-conscious. You can also have labiaplasty to help improve the shape of your labia or address hypertrophic or asymmetrical labia minora.

Candidates for labiaplasty should be in good overall health, be near to their ideal weight, not use any nicotine products, and have realistic expectations for their results.

In preparation for the surgery, you will need to avoid anti-inflammatory medications and supplements (including aspirin, ibuprofen, NSAIDs, and some herbal supplements) and stop all nicotine use (including smoking and vaping). You will also need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from your surgery and stay with you initially.

What Happens If I Get Pregnant After My Labiaplasty?

Having had a labiaplasty will not affect a future pregnancy, although delivering a child could impact the appearance of the labia.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

Labiaplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure that will reduce and refine the size and shape of the labia, leading to an improved appearance and greater patient comfort.

This procedure usually takes one to two hours to perform.

For patient comfort, local or general anesthesia is used depending on the patient’s needs and the plastic surgeon’s professional opinion.

Labiaplasty is usually performed using one of the following techniques.

  • Trim method: Tissue is excised along the entire edge of the labium lip. This technique does not preserve the natural border.
  • Wedge method: A wedge-shaped (v-shaped) piece of tissue is removed from each labium, and the edges are brought together. This technique preserves the natural labium border.

What Is Labiaplasty Recovery Like?

As an outpatient procedure, you can expect to go home to recover after the surgery.

You will be prescribed pain relieving and antibiotic medications, and you can expect your recovery to take approximately four to six weeks. During this period, you will be expected to check in with your doctor, who’ll assess the healing progress.

Even after you’re fully healed, your labia may remain swollen, and this is completely normal. The swelling will go away with time.

You’ll also be expected to avoid physical activities like working out, having penetrative sex, or riding a bike for at least six weeks. You will also have to avoid wearing tampons for at least six weeks.

To ensure you heal quickly, you’re advised to maintain the highest levels of hygiene and wear loose clothes to avoid irritating the wound.

What Results Can I Expect From Labiaplasty?

A successful labiaplasty reduces the size and enhances the shape of your labia, depending on your specifications.

Patients who’ve undergone the procedure report increased aesthetic benefit and more comfort when engaging in physical activities, increased confidence in their bodies, and painless or, for some, more pleasurable sex.

Are My Results Permanent?

Labiaplasty results are long lasting or permanent, barring future pregnancies or significant weight fluctuations. Should you get pregnant after labiaplasty, an additional procedure may be desired.

How Much Is Labiaplasty in Houston, TX?

The final cost of your labiaplasty will vary by patient depending on the specifics of your procedure and your surgeon’s skill and experience. Additional cost factors include anesthesia fees, facility fees, surgeon’s fees, and any procedure being performed in combination.

You will be given an accurate price estimate during your consultation with Dr. Gallas that takes all of the above factors into account.

Should Labiaplasty Be Combined With Any Other Surgeries?

While some women desire labiaplasty as a standalone procedure, others choose to combine their labiaplasty with other body contouring procedures or as part of a Mommy Makeover. A Mommy Makeover is a combination body and breast plastic surgery procedure that targets the areas most affected by childbirth. For many women, this includes the labia region.

Additional procedures that can be performed during a Mommy Makeover include:
